Sugar – tumour fuel?

The previous post highlighted the proven link between artificial sweeteners and obesity and glucose resistance and type 2 diabetes.  A cruel outcome of trying to do something that is supposed to be good for our health.  As discussed in that blog post, artificial sweeteners do not actually state that they are good for you, they just let you assume that, when they state that they do not contain sugar.

Today we are going to look at the physiology behind the role of high blood sugar and cancer cell proliferation.

It is fact that cancer cells switch from using oxygen for metabolism ( aerobic ) to being non oxygen using cells ( anaerobic ).  If a cell does not use oxygen to release energy, then it will use glucose.

The University of California, San Franciso, article published  in 2013 stated that sugar posed a health risk that is so well documented that it should be classed with tobacco with limited availability, additional taxes and clear warnings.

Researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Utah were among the first to discover that sugar feeds tumours. It is not new information, it was known in 1923 that cancer cells use much more glucose that normal cells.

Dr. Thomas Graeber, a professor of molecular and medical pharmacology, has investigated how the metabolism of glucose affects the biochemical signals present in cancer cells. In research published June 26, 2012 in the journal Molecular Systems Biology, Graeber and his colleagues demonstrate that glucose starvation—that is, depriving cancer cells of glucose—activates a metabolic and signaling amplification loop that leads to cancer cell death as a result of the toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Refined sugars are strongly linked to cancer via 2 pathways. 1. They increase inflammation a precondition for tumour development. 2. Sugar fuels cancer cells.

Excess sugar spikes insulin and Insulin like Growth Factor, combined with the inflammatory effect of sugar this makes a powerful environment for faster cell growth.

Reducing the level of refined sugar in the diet can delay the emergence of cancer cells and the proliferation of existing cells can be delayed on stopped.

Drs. Rainer Klement and Ulrike Kammerer conducted a comprehensive review of the literature involving dietary carbohydrates and their direct and indirect effect on cancer cells, which was published in October 2011 in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism, concluding that cancers are so sensitive to the sugar supply that cutting that supply will suppress cancer. “Increased glucose flux and metabolism promotes several hallmarks of cancer such as excessive proliferation, anti-apoptotic signaling, cell cycle progression and angiogenesis.

An increase in mercury levels will also facilitate and increase in cancer cell growth by binding with selenium.  Selenium is necessary for glutathione production, the master antioxidant. There is a mathematical link to low selenium levels in soil and cancer incidence in the local populations. High Fructose Corn Syrup has high mercury levels because of the complex process to produce it.  You are getting 2 different drivers of tumour growth. Fructose and low selenium levels.  Research has shown that Redox Molecule supplementation increases Glutathione production by 500%.

What is most interesting is that high quality research was conducted in the 20’s that highlighted the mechanism of tumour cell growth.  Tumour cells use sugar as fuel, confirmed by the observation of A. Braunstein in 1921 that in those who developed cancer glucose secretion in the urine stopped.

Otto Warburg

Dr. Otto Warburg’s 1924 paper ” On Metabolism of Tumours” hypothesised that cancer growth was caused when cancer cells converted glucose into energy without using oxygen. Healthy cells make energy by converting pyruvate and oxygen. The pyruvate is oxidized within a healthy cell’s mitochondria, and Warburg theorized that since cancer cells don’t oxidize pyruvate, cancer must be considered a mitochondrial dysfunction.  This will explain why a Redox Molecule supplement has been shown to reduce tumours.

Sugar turns the body into a suitable breeding ground for viruses, bacteria, fungi and cancer by devastating the immune system.
