Add these botanic agents to reduce crying in babies with colic.

A study published in 2005 showed a 261% reduction in crying in 1 week.  This is a significant change and well worth a trial.  Time spent crying each day was recorded at an average of 201.2minutes at the beginning of the trial and again at 1 week. The average time of crying in the treated group had fallen to 76.9 minutes a whopping 2.61 fold reduction for 85.4% of the group.

The untreated placebo group experienced a more modest improvement of 15%. Crying times started at 197.8 minutes a day and fell to 169.9 minutes a day in 48% of the subjects.

You’re desperate to know what it was that was offered to the treated group that was so effective.  Fennel, Fenugreek and Melissa ( Lemon balm )  were the three plant extracts that were used.  You can check out the source material here: Phytother Res. 2005 Apr;19(4):335-40. PMID: 16041731

The obvious question is how was it administered.  Essential oils massaged into the tummy and back would be a great way to administer these plant extracts.

If you wanted to work with essential oils there suggested oils graded into 3 categories by the DoTerra company.   Purchase oils here

Primary recommendations: Marjoram, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang

Secondary recommendations: Ginger, Roman Chamomile,

Other recommendations: Rosemary, Melissa

All of these oils should be used topically.  A recommended blend:

2 Tbs of almond oil with 1 drop of Roman chamomile, 1 drop lavender and 1 drop geranium.  Mix and massage gently into the stomach and back.

If you wanted to use any of the primary recommendations dilute 1-2 drops in 2 Tbs of fractionated coconut oil and massage gently into the stomach and back.

Massage has been shown to be significantly more effective for reducing infantile colic than rocking.   A study published recently in 2016 showed that massage was significantly more effective for reducing crying in colic ddx babies than rocking.

We can combine the 2 therapies for an even stronger effect when we massage the baby with an essential oil blend, as above.
